What to do now

• Move the vehicle to the safest possible spot (left shoulder/lay-by), if it can roll safely.
• Switch on hazard lights; use a warning triangle if you can place it without stepping into traffic.
• Keep passengers away from moving traffic; if the shoulder is narrow, wait behind a barrier if available.
• Call for road side assistance early if you are unsure the vehicle can continue safely.

What NOT to do

• Do not attempt repairs on the live carriageway or in a blind spot/curve.
• Do not let passengers stand near the vehicle on the traffic-facing side.
• Do not keep driving if there is smoke, a burning smell, steering/brake issues, or unusual vibrations.

When to call Crossroads Helpline
Call if the vehicle is immobilised, warning lights indicate a serious fault, you have a puncture in an unsafe location, the battery is flat, you are locked out, or you need safe towing coordination.
